In real terms this means that we find her not only hanging out with her friends but worrying about the same things as everyone else during lockdown. She acknowledged as much when she wrote on social media that the ongoing flack, “has pushed me to explore my own family tree, to dig deep, and to continue to exhibit the fact that god only cares about how I move through the world.” The diaristic nature of the lyric peels away the persona she’s created (although she denies doing so) and for which she’s perhaps unfairly received much criticism. She surrounds herself with a gang of friends on the title track as she tries to get over the heartbreak of separating from a man who’d promised to, “ Give me children, take away my pain/ And paint my banisters blue.” The friends namechecked include Nikki Lane, who appeared on “Breaking Up Slowly” from her previous album and is here found swimming in her outdoor pool. Many of the new songs continue to riff on the theme of female solidarity from her March release. It has the feel of a lockdown project, with some tracks clearly written during the pandemic while others have been dusted off from the vaults during the break in her usual promotion cycle. If this suggested something of a Kanye West recording fiasco then the good news is that it’s a perfectly good album, albeit one that lacks the careful curation of her recent works.

The album was mysteriously pulled from schedules shortly after that, only to re-appear under the new title Blue Banisters with first a July and then an October release date. Initially titled Rock Candy Sweet and slated for a June release, she told her Instagram followers that it was, “about what it was like, what happened, and what it’s like now.”

Lana Del Rey’s eighth album was trailed even before listeners had been given the chance to properly digest Chemtrails Over the Country Club.
